Application Guide
How to Apply to a Massachusetts Institution
The path to studying in Massachusetts follows a clear set of steps. Here is what to expect.
Research & Shortlist
Use our Find Schools & Programs tool to explore institutions by program level, region, setting, and scholarship availability. Shortlist three to five institutions that match your goals.
Prepare Your Application
Most institutions require academic transcripts, English language test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo), a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Check each institution's specific requirements.
Apply & Receive Your I-20
Submit your application directly to the institution. Once accepted, you will receive an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) or DS-2019 form, which you need to apply for your student visa.
Apply for Your Student Visa
Use your I-20 to apply for an F-1 student visa at the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. Pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 form, and schedule your visa interview.
Arrive & Enrol
Once your visa is approved, arrange your travel and housing. Attend your institution's international student orientation to get settled and begin your studies.
Visa & Immigration
Understanding Your Student Visa
Most international students study in the US on an F-1 student visa. Here are the key things to know.
F-1 Student Visa
The F-1 visa is the most common visa for full-time academic study at a US institution. It is sponsored by your institution and managed through the SEVIS system.
SEVIS & the I-20
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) tracks international students in the US. Your I-20 form from your institution is your key document.
Work Authorisation (OPT/CPT)
F-1 students may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) during their studies and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation — up to 12 months, or 36 months for STEM graduates.
Maintaining Your Status
To maintain your F-1 status, you must remain a full-time student, keep your passport valid, and report any changes to your Designated School Official (DSO) at your institution.
Visa requirements and immigration rules change. Always consult your institution's international student office or a qualified immigration adviser for guidance specific to your situation.
